Posh Bingo found themselves unwittingly embroiled in a bingo scam the other day, with a fraudulent site posing as Posh Bingo trying to hijack some of the online bingo operators traffic. Whilst we have often talked about the need for online bingo players to feel secure and play safe when it comes to online bingo, we were shocked to see the new lengths in which some of the less reputable online bingo sites are going in their bid to attract players, notably, attacking an established bingo site and try and piggy back on their popularity.
It’s no doubt testament to the fact that the online bingo industry has grown so much over the last year – with so much money involved, cyber criminals are bound to look for ways to take advantage and take what they can from expectant players. We were a little worried, and then, we went on the site, and turns out… it’s pretty rubbish.
In terms of site design, when we hopped over to the fake wwwposhbingo.com, we were amazed at just how terrible it was. Whilst it does contain the Posh Bingo logo, the layout and limited information would immediately ring alarm bells in our heads. As frequent players of online bingo sites, you begin to get a feel for what looks good – and what looks like a dud. With a click of a button, you are then redirected to another bingo site, in what can only be described as a classic case of dirty tricks. Players needn’t be too worried, as it seems this site is merely using the Posh Bingo logo a little fraudulently in a bid to steal some of their would be players.
Imitation may well be the sincerest form of flattery, but we were surprised Posh Bingo weren’t a bit more angry about the use of their logo in such a crude way. For operators, it is a pertinent reminder that now that the money is getting serious in online bingo, so are the criminals – and so the potential for your brand to be exploited for the good of others becomes all the more inevitable. It seems as though its business as usual at Posh bingo despite the brush with fraud, with the site ignoring most of the commotion caused and focusing on continuing to offer it’s players some of the swankiest and swishest bingo around.
But with scams like this becoming all the more frequent, it seems that Posh Bingo are most certainly not the first site to experience a spot of identity theft – and wont be the last.
And whilst the identity theft of a bingo website is one thing, playing on unsecured bingo sites can lead to some disastrous personal identity theft and fraud for players. In our opinion, its worthwhile keeping in mind at all times when you are playing online bingo to be aware and stay alert. The Posh Bingo scam involved just a simple mistype error, so although it’s basic advice, its easy to forget – double check your browser when playing online bingo!
Luckily all the sites that we review will have genuine systems in place to ensure that when you play on them, you are playing in a safe environment that will not compromise your security and peace of mind. Clicking on the links will always take you directly to the right site, and you can be sure that every site we review is chosen for being some of the best out there. However, we would always recommend our players to stay on their toes every now and then – that way, you can get back to the serious task of enjoying your online bingo!
